Annual Band Events

Below are generic descriptions of our typical annual events and approximately when they are held.

Summer Band Camp

During the summer, before school starts, the coming year's marching band members meet all day for a week and a half to learn the new routine for the year.  New band members also get instructed in the basics.  Entering freshman have an additional "Freshman Pre-Camp" that meets for a couple days prior to the full band camp (which they also attend).  The auxiliary and percussion members also have additional specific practices/camps.  On the last day of full band camp (a Saturday), band parents are invited to a family BBQ at the school to watch the band perform what they've learned.  Besides jump starting the learning process, this forms the kids into a band family.  The BBQ is important for parents to attend to get band info for the coming year.

Band Competitions

The marching band competes at various competitions during the fall.  View the performance  calendar.  Learn what really goes on at a band competition.  Or what all those competition terms mean.  A more detailed explanation of competition judging and scoring is here.

Sunset Classic

Each year during band competition season, Sunset High School hosts a band competition called the Sunset Classic.  It is the major SAMBA fundraiser for the year.  The Sunset band does not itself compete, although they do perform "in exhibition".  Information about the current Sunset Classic is here.

Cabaret Night

Annual evening event in February.  The band performs.  Food and dessert is served.  Each band section creates a themed basket of goodies and these baskets are raffled off.  Sometimes there is also an auction of various things.  This is both a fundraiser and a really fun time.
