Competition scoring varies only slightly from region to region. SAMBA competes in
the Northwest Marching Band Circuit. This
describes their judging and scoring.
Judging
There are eight judges involved in the evaluation of bands. Each will
consider one of the following categories:
Music General Effect
This judge will evaluate how musically the performers play. Expression,
dynamics, phrasing, and all other elements of quality musical presentation will
be considered. In addition he or she will take into account how well the
elements of the performance are coordinated to form a unified production.
Music Ensemble
This judge will evaluate the technical accuracy, intonation, and tone quality
with the consideration of context - that is, demand and exposure of the
performance. He or she will assess how well the musicians perform together
with regard to the difficulty of the music being performed.
Music Individual
This judge will be concerned with the same elements judged in the Music
Ensemble category, but on an individual basis rather than the entire band.
Visual General Effect
This judge determines how well the drill program (marching and formations)
interprets the music, and also considers the coordination of the visual aspect
of the show.
Visual Ensemble
the success of a presentation depends on the ability of a group to sell the
performance to the audience. This judge awards points based on the
band's showmanship.
Visual Individual
This judge observes marching performance and evaluates the group on the
accuracy, poise, and posture of individuals, bearing in mind the difficulty of
the routine.
Percussion
This judge evaluates the percussion unit as a part of the band
(coordination and contribution) and as an individual unit (repertoire,
performance effectiveness, and execution).
Auxiliary
This judge scores the degree of excellence of the flags, rifles, twirlers,
and other auxiliary performers.
Scoring
All of the points are combined from the separate categories (using a
weighting described below) and any penalties are deducted to determine the
band's final core. The percussion and auxiliary scores are tabulated
separately and do not affect the band's total score. [I'm not sure that
last sentence is true. - Ed.]
Each category has a maximum number of points. Those points are then
combined in a weighted sum to produce a score with a maximum value of 100.
